assignment 5

This time I kept the idea of an awkward moment feeling like a long time but with a different scene and more use of short cuts.

Assignment 5: Operation Instructions (a video)

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

This time around I recreated the video that did not address an aspect of time.  I wanted to refocus my project on my body in space, and the abstraction of that through the moving image.  I played with the ideas of editing to creature rupture in a smooth visual narrative but also have attempted to play with editing beyond one take meshing different angles and camera positions to make a fluid work.  I hope it shows progress.

yellow

Yellow is a color with many personalities. Some of the yellow I captured was calming, easy going with a rhythmic flow, but other fragments of yellow were jolting with hard lines crisply defining the pigment. And so this short film is dedicated to the color yellow.

Assignment #4 – fast, slow and random Time

Easy Does It

In my concept of time passing slowly, it goes by especially agonizingly slow when you’re asking someone out. The tension is palpable and the awkwardness of the moment is nigh impossible to bear.

F-fast foward

My idea of time passing quickly is over the event of meals. Be it with loved ones, friends and family, I find it can never be long enough if the company is great. Most of the moments zip past us without us noticing but a few fleeting moments are captured by our memories. Like an endearing song, we forget most of the lyrics, but no one forgets the chorus.

Sound Dub

For the last video I wanted to play around with the concept of mash-ups, where existing material is taken and reshaped to form entirely new pieces. Mash-up is predominantly found in music, where 2 or more existing songs are remixed to form a reworked, unique beat. This video takes speech from the footage that I have to form new, wacky, sometimes inappropriate dialogue.

an ode to coffee

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

For my third video, I wanted to choose a certain object that is an important part of everyday life in Brown and make a ‘tribute’ to it by collecting many clips in which it is present. Coffee came to my mind first when I was thinking what to choose.

Assignment #3

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

This film (the film of my choice) utilizes a repositioning of sound to play with expectation. The sound used with each clip attempts to represent the reality of the experience of each activity rather than the actual physical reality. The juxtaposition of a “sermon” over top of clips of skateboarding and moving through traffic attempts to point out some of the dangerous absurdities of religion, which become further emphasized by the loud stressful noises used in the chapel scenes.

Note: When exporting this video 30 some seconds of black space where added to the end of the video. I am not sure why or how this happened as I did not add all that space myself. The film is meant to end after the roaring noise of the skateboard fades out.

This film depicts time moving slowly through the manipulation of anticipation. I wanted to make a film that was almost excruciatingly slow and borderline annoying to watch. The viewer waits for something exciting to happen, but nothing ever does. Time always seems to move slower when one is anticipating something, so I utilized the anticipation of getting to the top of an escalator to make time seem to move more slowly. The audio for this film is an attempt to recreate the impression of the repetitive and irritating elevator music that is constantly playing inside malls.

This film juxtaposes religious and commercial imagery to represent the overwhelming and fast paced world of consumerism. Consumerism has reached something of a religious status in modern society and I wanted to draw attention to this. The film compares and contrasts stained glass windows with advertisements, preachers with mannequins, and churches with malls. The audio enhances the sense of overstimulation with fast paced rhythms and strange traces of distorted music.

it felt like just a minute, but…

In this video, I tried to show how time can pass in a completely different way in dreams.

a moment that seems like eternity

I created an awkward elevator scene to hopefully show how a very short time can feel like forever when you are uncomfortable.

Wind Series 2 of 2

The subtle movements created by a light breeze give an impression of tranquility and serenity. These muted movements mixed with elements of a city and cringing audio allows for an interesting juxtaposition.

A Slow Walk

This piece conveys motion and the slow rhythm of foot steps.
